BOOKING A PRESERVE HUNT

To hunt the Preserve at Timberghost there are no tags to draw or lotteries to win. Rather than wait years to secure a highly competitive free range tag to hunt Iowa and put a whitetail adventure together, you can have that adventure with us this season. It is as simple as filling out the form below to request your dates. Preserve hunters can use rifle, bow, crossbow, muzzleloader or pistol on most hunts. The only restriction on weapons is that the Adventure hunts in November are archery only.

THE PROCESS

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) facilitates the process of drawing a hunting tag in the state of Iowa through an annual lottery. Each year, hunters apply and enter a preference point-based draw through the DNR and a limited number of tags are awarded. Having helped thousands of hunters over the past 20 years, Timberghost takes into account what season a hunter prefers and helps implement a plan for the best path within the shortest time frame possible to get you in the Iowa woods. Since it is a preference point-based lottery, we typically recommend purchasing preference points each year until you have accumulated enough points to successfully draw a tag and plan your hunt with confidence. If we have availability and you feel lucky, you can attempt to draw a tag with fewer points. If you do not draw a tag, you will automatically earn a preference point and therefore your application has a better chance of being drawn the following year.

The application period is approximately from May 1 to June 1
Results of the draw usually posted by mid-July
Timberghost has no control over who will draw or not draw a tag for any given year
If you do not draw a tag, you will receive a refund less the cost of a preference point

BOOKING A FREE-RANGE HUNT

Since Iowa is a draw state, Timberghost can’t guarantee when you will draw a tag, but we use historical data to give you as accurate a timeline as possible to plan your trip to Iowa. Gun hunters typically take two years to draw while archery hunters normally require 4-5 years to draw a tag.

Upon booking, we will send you an application that we submit to the Iowa DNR for a preference point or license/tag depending on the year of your scheduled hunt. Each year you apply we will bill out a $500 deposit to keep your dates secure and submit your application. The deposit does not cover license fees that will be charged by the state of Iowa. All deposits received will be applied to your hunt cost the year you successfully draw a tag and successful applicants will be required to pay half of the remaining balance of their hunt cost upon successfully drawing a tag with the balance due 60 days prior to your hunt dates. All deposits are non-refundable.
